University Round Table
New members are invited to join University Round Table in time for the fall dinner meeting Oct. 27 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Louise McBee, UGA dean and vice president before her retirement, and now in her third term representing Athens in the Georgia General Assembly, will speak about Issues of Georgia Politics.
University Round Table consists of approximately 400 students, faculty, staff and members of the Athens-Clarke community. URT provides an intellectually stimulating environment for discussion of contemporary issues at two meetings each semester: one a dinner and one an informal dessert. The varied ages, ethnic backgrounds and academic and professional interests of the members enrich the discussions with a wide range of viewpoints.
At the dinner meetings, each table has an even mix of students, faculty, staff and community members. The guest speaker begins with a presentation designed to provoke discussion during dinner; after dinner, the speaker takes questions or comments from members. Dessert meetings are more informal and often deal with local issues.
The fall dessert meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18 in the Georgia Room at Snelling dining hall. The group will discuss Athens Traditions with guests Vince Dooley (athletic director), Milton Leathers (local historian) and Nash Boney (emeritus history professor).
Membership dues are $25 per year. Dinner meetings cost $10 and desserts are $5 ($3 students). To join, or for more information, call Rick Rose in student affairs: 542-3564 (e-mail rrose@arches.uga.edu).
