Teaching black history

www.uga.edu/iaas/

The Web site for UGA’s Institute for African American Studies successfully balances institutional information with background about the institute’s area of expertise.
Students can check the Web site for a list of courses taught through the institute or for the requirements for a certificate in African-American studies. Courses included in the proposed major in African-American studies are also listed.
The page which lists institute faculty and staff includes small easy-to-download photographs, with links to brief biographies for both faculty and staff. Separating biographies from the basic list maintains the clear uncluttered look of the site, and gives faculty members the chance to include a selected bibliography.
The highlight of the site for the casual visitor, however, is the introductory section on African Americans in American history. Short biographies and, when available, photos and drawings provide a quick reference, from Benjamin Banneker through Cynthia McKinney.
