Committee named to select candidates for deanship

By Larry B. Dendy

Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, has appointed a committee to recommend candidates for dean of the College of Education. Sharon Nickols, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will chair the 14-member committee, composed of faculty, staff, students and alumni.
The committee will recommend a successor to Russell Yeany, who has announced that he will step down Aug. 31 after six years as dean. Nickols says the goal is to have the new dean chosen by the start of the next academic year.
“Dean Yeany has provided superior leadership for the College of Education,” Nickols says. “We intend to find a new dean who has the same quality of leadership skills and vision and will keep the college on its trajectory of excellence.”
Faculty members on the committee are Wyatt Anderson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Carl Glickman, professor of social foundations of education; Jeremy Kilpatrick, professor of mathematics education; Cheri Hoy, professor of special education; Ron Cervero, professor of adult education; Joan Buttram, associate professor of dance; Rosemary Phelps, assistant professor of counseling and human resources; Rod Dishman, professor of exercise science; and David Kurtz, professor of social work.
Other members are Shea Ray, chair of the Staff Representative Group in the College of Education; Glenda Eades, a budget analyst and office manager in the college; John Gillespie, a graduate student in occupational studies; Meredith David, an undergraduate student majoring in communication science and disorders; and Barbara Wright, principal of Barrow Elementary School, representing the college’s alumni.
