The university’s impact on the Athens economy is nearly $1 billion annually, according to a new study by the Terry College of Business.
“Faculty and staff salaries and, secondly, student spending are the leading contributors to the Athens economy,” says Jeff Humphreys, director of economic forecasting in the college and the study’s lead author. “More than one out of every five jobs held by local residents owes its existence to UGA-related spending.”


Committee named to select candidates for deanship

Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, has appointed a committee to recommend candidates for dean of the College of Education.
Sharon Nickols, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will chair the 14-member committee, composed of faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Virginia Y. Trotter, who served as the university’s first vice president for academic affairs and was considered a role model for women in higher education, died Oct. 11 in Athens. She was 76.
During her 40-year career as a teacher and administrator, Trotter broke ground for women aspiring to leadership positions in higher education.
