Carmen Chaves Tesser, professor of Romance languages, was recently conferred an Encomienda de la Orden de Alfonso I, El Sabio, by the king of Spain, Juan Carlos I. The Spanish Minister of Education presented a medal and certificate to Tesser on behalf of King Juan Carlos in July. During the ceremony, Tesser made a formal presentation about her work and the status of Spanish studies in the United States.
One of the Spanish government’s highest honors, the Civil Order of Alfonso X, El Sabio was established in 1939 to honor those who have distinguished themselves in research, culture, science, arts or education. Although the Civil Order of Alfonso X, El Sabio was initially established to honor only Spanish citizens, it was changed by Royal Decree in 1976 to recognize honorees from other countries.
During the 1970s and 1980s, 23 people from around the world received the Encomienda. Tesser is one of three people to receive the honor during the 1990s.
