University Council will hold its first meeting of the 1996-97 academic year Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the law school auditorium.


Cognitive seminar
Alan Dennis, management department, will speak on "The Exchange, Learning and Use of Information in Verbal and Computer-Supported Group Decision Making" Oct. 22 at 1:15 p.m. in room 205 Caldwell Hall. Red Cross training
The East Georgia chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for recruits interested in being trained as volunteer case workers to assist fire victims. It will hold a workshop titled "Emergency Assistance to Families" Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Barber Creek Fire Department in Oconee County. To register, call 353-1645.

Each year, the Red Cross responds to tens of thousands of apartment and residential fires, which make up more than 90 percent of the total number of disasters to which the organization responds.


Ecology symposium
A symposium titled "Institute of Ecology: Past, Present and Future" will be held Oct. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 1996 at the Institute of Ecology auditorium. The symposium will focus on the history of the Institute and its founders.

Many who played a vital role in the evolution of the Institute will give their views of its development, including former directors Eugene Odum, Frank Golley and Ronald Pulliam. Gene Likens, founder of the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y., will talk on "The Ecosystem Approach, Eugene Odum, and the Future," on Oct. 26 at 3:50 p.m.

This event will also feature the first public screening of a film on the life and work of Eugene Odum, Institute of Ecology director emeritus and Callaway Professor Emeritus. The documentary, "Eugene Odum: An Ecologist's Life," will be shown at 4 p.m. on Oct. 25. Many of Odum's friends and colleagues, including current and former Institute directors, can also be seen reminiscing about the man and his career. Jimmy Carter makes an appearance as well, talking about Odum at the Carter Center in Atlanta.

Proceedings from this symposium will be published in a book covering the major aspects of the Institute's history. The book will be useful to those interested in the development of similar organizations around the country and in the strengthening of ecology at the national and international levels in the future.

Botany symposium
The botany department holds the inaugural Palfrey Symposium Oct. 25-26 in Masters Hall of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The theme is "Integrative Approaches to Problems in Plant Biology."

This year's meeting brings together foremost researchers who use cellular, molecular, genetic and/or population biology methodologies in addressing questions of the unique reproductive systems of plants. Speakers are Alison Snow, Ohio State University; Sally Mackenzie, Purdue University; Alice Cheung, Yale University; and Joshua Kohn, University of California. IBR seminar

Parade entry deadline
The deadline to enter the 1996 Annual Athens Downtown Christmas Parade is Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. A $20 fee will be charged to all parade entrants. However, $20 coupons redeemable for free entry are available to those who attend a parade workshop Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at Memorial Park on Gran Ellen Drive.

This year's parade is Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in downtown Athens; the theme is "A Season of Music and Lights." $2,700 will be given in prize money to the winners in various categories. For more information, call Don Oliver, 613-3580.


Literary reading
James W. Hall, a poet turned short-story writer and then best-selling author of suspense novels set in his native South Florida, will read from his work Nov. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in room 265 Park Hall. His appearance, open free to the public, is sponsored by The Georgia Review, the Creative Writing Progam, the English department and the UGA libraries.

Hall also will conduct an informal question-and-answer session about writing and publishing prior to his reading. This 45minute session, also open to the public, will take place in room 261 Park Hall (the English department library). For more information, call 542-3481.
