No royalty at University of Illinois
Breaking a 62-year-old tradition, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has decided not make the election of king and queen part of the school’s homecoming activities. Officials who are organizing homecoming made the decision after the student-run Illini Union Board stated last spring that it would not sponsor the annual election and would instead focus on other activities. A committee will still select a homecoming court, on the basis of grade-point averages, activities, honors and essays submitted by nominees.

Diversity at Indiana University
For the next two decades, Indiana University senior administrators will be held accountable for the school’s diversity efforts. An IU report released recently recommended several structural and procedural changes, including the removal of advocacy deans in the schools and colleges and the creation of a position at the vice chancellor’s level charged with responsibility for improving the racial climate at IU. The responsibility of administrators for their roles in complying with the diversity plan is considered the report’s most significant aspect.
