| Monkeying around Tulane Two dozen rhesus monkeys escaped from the Tulane University Regional Primate Center recently and scurried about in nearby woods. The monkeys freed themselves by loosening a corral to create space to slip through the gate. Tulanes Regional Primate Center houses more than 4,500 monkeys, which it uses to study infectious diseases. The escapees reportedly were used for breeding and did not carry any diseases. The centers director reported that all monkeys were retrieved within 48 hours. Tuition abolished in Hungary Hungarys state universities are reversing a three-year policy and bucking the current European trend by abolishing tuition. Under a new government, higher education will be free for most students. Since 1995, students had been paying 2,200 forints per month--approximately $10 in U.S. currency. The average monthly salary in Hungary is equivalent to about $300. Students working on a second degree, taking longer than five years to complete their degree or submitting below-average entrance-exam scores will still be required to pay the fee. Free tuition was part of the political platform of the Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Party in the countrys elections this past spring. It is estimated that the move will cost the government around $14.5 million this year. |
