UGA Symphony Orchestra performs with concerto competition winners

The UGA Symphony Orchestra will present the annual School of Music Concerto Competition winners in a free performance on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall of the Performing Arts Center.
Each of the five featured soloists for the evening, chosen from a final round of 26 students, will perform one movement of a major concerto with the orchestra.
This year’s winners are all outstanding musicians and, for the first time in this competition, all graduate students. Pamela Garner will perform the Copland clarinet concerto; Brian Urso will play Tomasi’s trumpet concerto; Woo-Young Choi will perform Schumann’s piano concerto; Mauricio Soto has selected the Concert Rondo for Horn by Mozart; and Macarena Ferrer will play Chausson’s Poeme for Violin and Orchestra.
Symphony conductor Mark Cedel has conducted the Schumann and the Chausson before, but the other works on the program are new for him, and all of the works are new to the orchestra. Cedel notes that these concerto competition performances present a challenge since the winners often choose contemporary or late Romantic pieces with complicated accompaniments. There is little time to prepare the orchestra between the final round of the competition, when the winners are determined, and the public performance. He admits to being daunted by that challenge at times, but says that ultimately the competition and performance are for the benefit of the students, and they always present a satisfying and enthusiastic performance.
“For some, this may be the first or only time they perform a concerto with an orchestra, a major accomplishment in itself,” Cedel says. “I’m always heartened by the warmth and support the students in the orchestra and the audience show for the winners. I’ve never sensed any jealousy or envy and feel that the students want their friends to excel and fly high; they’re right there with them.”
