On Nov. 17, UGA President Michael Adams hosted “Open Mike with Mike,” a chance for UGA students to question the president. Some excerpts:

On the issue of freshman cars on campus:
“The entire campus would benefit from being less of a commuter school. . . . I am not a proponent of trying to take freshmen out of their cars. . . . There is a need for more prudent use of vehicles on campus.”

On technology in residence halls:
“One of the few places where we are behind [our peer institutions] is the residence halls. . . . We need some help--there has been 35 years of neglect in that area. . . . We need additional funding mechanisms. For the Reed Hall renovation project, we used our own money [but] we also need a computer requirement, a technology fee, or both.”

On the future of the tenure system:
“Tenure, properly employed, is a legitimate protection. . . . I don’t think you’re going to see [tenure] dissipate at a major research university. That would put us at a competitive disadvantage.”

On affirmative action in admissions:
“We have not yet developed a model [at UGA] that reflects the state. I have a personal commitment to educating more African Americans in Georgia. . . . Being a minority will not admit you to the University of Georgia. . . . [race] is a small factor, one of 12 [factors]. . . . We’d be better served by keeping affirmative action in place, for now.”
