Freshman Seminar proposals sought
Faculty are invited to submit proposals for the Freshman Seminar Program sponsored by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors Program. In fall 1999 and spring 2000 the program will offer a selection of one-hour academic seminars, under the heading of FRES 1010 and 1020, designed to introduce new students to research, study and the intellectual life of the University of Georgia.
Freshman-seminar students will meet with faculty on a regular basis and learn about their interests and research. Because students will select topics that interest them, those who enroll in the program should be attentive and motivated. For some students FRES seminars may serve as an entry to the major. In 1997--98 this program was in place for its first full year and attracted considerable interest among students as well as faculty. Seminars taught during this past year are listed on the Web (ben.franklin.uga.edu/dstaff/hruppers/lists.htm).
Enrollment is open to all freshmen. Seminars will enroll 15 students and meet for one 50-minute session per week. Students will be graded on a Pass/Fail (FRES 1010) or traditional A--F (FRES 1020) basis and will receive one hour of academic credit towards graduation.
Creative, innovative proposals are being sought for the fall 1999 or spring 2000 semesters. Plans are to schedule two-thirds of the seminars in the fall term. Faculty may teach a seminar on their own or with one or more colleagues; the topic may lie within a single discipline or may cross disciplines, but should not assume much prior knowledge by prospective students.
To propose a seminar, complete the on-line form at dstaff5.franklin.uga.edu/fres/proposal.htm or send proposals to Freshman Seminar Program, 310F New College, or by e-mail to hruppers@franklin.uga.edu. Proposals should include a title and brief description and should indicate the preferred class period, day and semester.
The college will schedule seminars that reflect the diverse talents, interests and research skills of faculty at the University of Georgia.

Annual public service conference rescheduled
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach has announced that the annual Public Service and Outreach Conference, originally scheduled for Jan. 28, has been moved to March 1. This year’s conference will deal with “The Global Millennium: The University’s Role in Transcending Barriers and Borders.” Recipients of the 1999 Hill Awards will be recognized at the luncheon that day. University Chorus
The department of choral activities and Grace Muzzo, conductor of the University Chorus, invites singers to join the University Chorus for spring semester 1999. The ensemble is open to all students, faculty and staff at the University of Georgia and there are no prerequisites or auditions. The chorus sings a variety of literature from the choral tradition. All voice parts are welcome and needed.
Rehearsals are held in the third-floor choral suite of the music building on East Campus on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. (those with classes at 4:45 are excused early). Call 542-2797 for more information.
