Irek and Chumbley Piano Duo

An accomplished composer and conductor as well as a concert pianist, Robert Chumbley currently serves as the executive and music director of the Atlanta Ballet. His compositions of chamber, solo and orchestral music have been performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, and he has served as composer-in-residence at music festivals in Europe and the United States. His numerous commissions include one from Opera America for a treatment of the best-selling novel Ordinary People, and he is collaborating with playwright Mark Medoff on an operatic treatment of Medoff’s Tony Award-winning play, Children of a Lesser God.
Chumbley, a graduate of the North Carolina School for the Arts and Juilliard, also enjoys an extensive international career as a pianist, often performing with his wife, Shirley Irek, who was born in Croatia and educated at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory, the California Institute of the Arts and Juilliard. Irek was the first recipient of the Van Cliburn Award.
Irek and Chumbley often perform as a duo. At 8 p.m. Feb. 20 in Ramsey Hall, they will perform Ravel’s Sites Auriculaire and Ma Mère l’Oye; Poulenc’s Sonato for One
Piano, Four Hands; and Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen.




Winslow Homer’s watercolor called Taking Sunflowers to Teacher, part of the museum’s permanent collection, is on exhibit at the museum through March 28, along with a related Homer pencil drawing called The Unruly Calf, on loan from the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Georgia Museum of Art. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. 542-4662.
