Raising the bar: University Council considers proposed academic honesty policy

Annual public service meeting focuses on ‘Global Millennium’

By Jean Cleveland

Challenges and opportunities facing land-grant and sea-grant universities in the next century are the focus of the Public Service and Outreach Conference set for March 1.
Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, is the keynote speaker at the opening session at 8:45 a.m.
A highlight of the annual conference is the presentation of the Walter B. Hill awards, scheduled to take place following the conference luncheon. All conference sessions are at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
Two panel discussions will seek to define international education and to develop strategies for its future direction.
Harlan Davis, director of international development, will moderate the panel on what international education means, with Carlos Martel, deputy director of the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism, and Gary Bertsch, director of the UGA Center for International Trade and Security, participating.
Milton Lopes of the Fanning Institute for Leadership and Community Development will moderate the discussion on the future direction of international education, with the dean of international programs at Oregon State University and the director of international affairs at East Carolina University participating.
An afternoon session on “Where Do We Go from Here?” will be moderated by S.E. Younts, vice president for public service and outreach and associate provost. A finale of international music will be presented in the Hill Atrium, where exhibits will showcase current international projects and programs at UGA.
“The land-grant, sea-grant university of the next century will face greater challenges and opportunities for providing meaningful services to a global society,” Younts says. “This conference seeks to provide a context within which the university can identify approaches to enhance global awareness, increase services and create new partnerships.”
