J. Peter Brosius, associate professor of anthropology, has been elected president of the anthropology and environment section of the American Anthropological Association.

Rod Dishman, professor of exercise science, has been named a “founding member” of the International Olympic Committee’s Academy of Science under the auspices of the IOC Medical Commission. The newly established academy is made up of top scientists from the field of movement, exercise and sports sciences. On behalf of the IOC, the group will work to organize annual meetings to provide a forum for scientists to present their latest research, establish high-level standards for scientific work, serve as an advisory board to the IOC, help to promote an interest in related areas and establish a fund to support research.





Henry M. (Hank) Huckaby, director of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, was appointed by former Gov. Zell Miller to the Southern Regional Education Board to fill an unexpired term ending June 30, 2002.
Created in 1948, the SREB is the first interstate compact for education. The organization’s primary mission is to help government and education leaders work cooperatively to advance education by directing attention to key issues; compiling and analyzing comparative data; and conducting broad studies and initiating discussions that relate to state and institutional long-range education planning.
SREB is governed by a board consisting of the governor of each of the 16-member states and four other individuals, including at least one state legislator and one educator. Huckaby joins UGA President Michael F. Adams; state Sen. Paul C. Broun and University System Chancellor Stephen R. Portch.



Nancy Staton, Athens area director of the university’s Business Outreach Services/Small Business Development Center, received the 1999 Athena Award from the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce.
The award recognizes professional accomplishments; community service, especially for mentoring others and providing a role model to encourage women to reach their full leadership potential; and civic involvement including chamber work.
In addition to the Athena Award, Staton also received the Consultant of the Year Award in January and the Association of Small Business Development Centers’ Star Performer Award in October.
