Campus community invited to see Georgia Center renovations

After months of planning and construction, the university’s continuing-education center will welcome the campus community inside to check out the “new and improved” Georgia Center on March 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. Renovations have run the gamut--from carpet to wallpaper, new restrooms to chandeliers--in an effort to keep the Georgia Center up-to-date for the hundreds of thousands of visitors that come through its doors each year.
In its 43rd year of operation, the 300,000-square-foot building houses a multitude of continuing-education programs and is supported by 200 hotel rooms, 26 conference rooms, two auditoriums, banquet facilities, and a restaurant, a coffee shop and a gift shop. The renovations included new carpeting and wallpaper in conference and banquet areas and hotel rooms, upgraded lighting and soundproofing of conference rooms, chandeliers in the banquet areas and new restrooms across from Mahler Auditorium, as well as artwork in selected parts of the building. Further renovations to the hotel rooms are expected throughout the year.
Grover J. Andrews, interim director of the center and assistant vice president for public service and outreach, says the new changes “are not only aesthetically pleasing, but will add to the educational experience of conference attendees.”
One of the most talked-about changes has been not the wallpaper but the coffee. Starbucks Coffee became available in the Commons Coffee Shop in the lobby in December, offering specialty coffees--including espresso, latté and cappuccino--to conferees and visitors. The brand change was suggested by visitors.
