| Some Bright Florida scholarship students taking remedial classes Nearly 10 percent of freshmen who attended Floridas public universities and community colleges last year on the states Bright Futures Scholarships had to take remedial classes in reading, English or math, according to a state analysis of student records. Critics called the finding proof that the expensive program was not achieving its aim of aiding Floridas best students. The two-year-old program, financed by the states lottery, awards partial and full scholarships to high school graduates who have maintained at least a B average and a minimum SAT score of 970. Students may use the scholarships to attend any college in Florida. University presses enjoy significant sales increase Sales increased significantly at university presses in 1998, according to figures released by the Association of American Publishers. University presses grossed more than $391 million in 1998, a 6.5 percent increase over 1997 figures and the largest increase in at least four years. The gain is attributed to a healthy year for the publishing industry as a whole, which saw sales of more than $28 billion in 1998. |
