Travel Medicine Clinic offers info for planning overseas trips

By Liz Rachun

Members of the university community who plan to travel abroad should check out the Travel Medicine Clinic at the University Health Center.
The clinic offers a variety of information--about immunizations, medical precautions, travel safety and handling a medical emergency. Services at the clinic are open to students, staff, faculty and the public. Kate Alden, the nurse who serves as travel-medicine consultant, recommends making an appointment well before travel begins, preferably at least six weeks in advance.
Faculty member Dawn Bennett-Alexander of the Terry College of Business is a frequent traveler and a big fan of the travel clinic. She first used the clinical services several years ago while planning a trip to Russia. “It’s a wonderful convenience to get everything you need in one place,” she says. She is currently making preparations for a family vacation in western Africa and came to the clinic for information and vaccinations.
Even a trip to Europe may require precautions. In most countries outside the United States, for example, an immunization guarding against Hepatitis A is recommended.
Alden can provide information that travelers are unlikely to receive from the health department or their private physician. She’s knowledgeable about health-care facilities throughout the world and will recommend, for example, that visitors who become ill in Nepal go to the CIWEC Clinic Travel Medicine Center in downtown Katmandu. She also keeps abreast of which parts of the world are trouble areas. Those who come to the clinic leave with a computerized report on health issues to consider while planning a trip.
