Former planning director dies

William E. (Billy) Hudson, former director of campus planning and a longtime Athens civic leader, died March 21 in Athens. He was 85.
An Athens native who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural engineering from the university, Hudson was associated with UGA for 46 years.
He was a professor of agricultural engineering, and as director of campus planning from 1962 to 1981 oversaw more than 160 major construction projects worth millions of dollars.
He also served as executive secretary to the Georgia Higher Education Facilities Commission.
He served on the boards of the UGA Athletic Association and Alumni Society and was president of the university chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta honor societies.
Hudson held leadership positions in numerous community organizations, including the Athens Rotary Club, Athens Community Council on Aging, United Way, Boy Scouts, Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission, board of zoning appeals and Northeast Georgia Area Planning and Development Commission. Among his many honors was UGA’s Abraham Baldwin Award.
