Prof’s family contributes to ‘Dream’ series

Essays by associate professor of legal studies Dawn D. Bennett-Alexander and each of her three daughters were chosen from more than 990 submissions for the new anthology Children of the Dream: Our Own Stories of Growing Up Black in America.
Compiled by Laurel Holliday, author of the “Children of Conflict” series, Children of the Dream is the first book in the series to focus on the American experience.
The anthology brings together the autobiographical experiences of 38 African Americans born after Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. Their stories explain the daily struggles of growing up faced with racism, hatred and violence and how those experiences have shaped their views of the world and of each other.
In eloquent, haunting and revealing true stories, these writers tell what it was like to come of age judged by the color of their skin.
The selections offer diversity in terms of social class, gender and sexual orientation and represent citizens from all areas of the United States, from rural to urban, rich to poor.
Filled with funny anecdotes and painful memories, individual perspectives and universal truths, the book sheds light on the individual struggles of so many to achieve the dream envisioned by King.
