| California adopts 4-percent rule The University of California Board of Regents has adopted a controversial academic policy to admit the top 4 percent of graduates from each high school in the state. The new policy, which takes effect in 2001, will yield about 3,600 additional students into the states higher education system and is considered to be the most significant expansion in two decades. The goal of the new policy is to increase the number of minorities and students from schools in rural and urban areas. Minnesota governor: Athletes shouldnt have to take classes On a recent KARE-TV interview program called Whatever, Jesse Ventura, governor of Minnesota and former professional wrestler, expressed his opinion that college athletes should not have to enroll in classes. To eliminate this cheating--or the possibility of it--why not let kids go to college and just be athletes while theyre there? the governor asked. Then, if they dont make it in [professional sports], then give them their scholarship. His comments were made in the wake of recent allegations about academic misconduct by members of the University of Minnesota mens basketball team. |
