Provost discusses safety, enrollment at student forum
By Jodi Riggins

The 50-plus students who gathered to raise questions and voice concerns to President Michael F. Adams April 1 found a pinch-hitter at the microphone. Because he was busy dealing with the indecision of newly named men’s basketball coach Jim Harrick, Adams was unable to attend the “Open Mike with Mike” session he had scheduled. Provost Karen Holbrook took his place and responded to student questions about pedestrian safety, minority enrollment and enrollment growth.
Several students urged the university to encourage the Athens-Clarke County government to increase pedestrian safety on campus.
“The local community has a safety plan for residential neighborhoods where they use speed-calming devices, but they don’t even consider taking actions to improve the safety of a campus where hundreds of students live,” one student said. Specifically, the students pointed out as hazardous the crossing on Lumpkin Street near the Founders Garden. Jere Morehead, acting director of legal affairs, said he would look into the issue.
Holbrook assured students that the issue of minority enrollment has been “raised to the front.” She said that the university is actively searching for a person to work on minority recruitment.
“We want to get someone who carries a leadership position on campus,” she said. “We don’t want to recruit someone just because he is a minority but because he is someone who knows how to work for minorities.”
The president has scheduled another “Open Mike with Mike” for April 19.
