The Native American Cultural Society is sponsoring The Footsteps of the Past Indian Festival April 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sandy Creek Park.
Admission is $3 and covers the park gate fee. Children younger than three and seniors 65 and older are admitted free.
A day of cultural education and entertainment, the festival will honor tribal traditions and teachings. Festival activities include dance exhibitions, drumming and singing, a flute performance, poetry, story-telling, primitive-skills demonstrations and Native American stick ball demonstrations.
Native artisans and traders also will offer traditional crafts, fine visual arts, beaded and silver jewelry, books, flutes, dolls, herbal products, gourd crafts and food.
A non-profit state corporation, the Native American Cultural Society includes two university student groups--the UGA Flying Rat Toli Club and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.

Downtown produce market
The Athens Downtown Produce Market opens early this year on May 8. Set up each Saturday through Aug. 28, the market will be open from 7 to 11 a.m. in the parking spaces directly across the street from City Hall (in front of First American Bank) on College Avenue.
All the produce at the market is grown in Athens-Clarke County and in surrounding counties. For those interested in organic food, the market has several certified organic producers who participate regularly. The market also sells fresh honey, herbs and cut flowers.
The market is a community project co-sponsored by the Athens Clarke-County office of UGAs Cooperative Extension Service, the Athens Downtown Development Authority and the Athens Area Master Gardeners.

Tchaikovsky competition
Victor Uzur, a cello student of David Starkweather, was named a semifinalist in the 11th Tchaikovsky International Competition for cello, violin, piano and voice.
Born in Yugoslavia and accepted into the Moscow Conservatory at the age of 17, where he later earned his degree in performance with special recognition as a concert performer, Uzur completed his master of music degree at the UGA School of Music He is now studying for his doctorate while performing with the UGA Symphony Orchestra and the ARCO Chamber Orchestra.
Held every four years, the 1998 Tchaikovsky International Competition is Uzurs second international event. He received the Special Prize in the Jeuness Musicales International Competition in Belgrade. He has also been awarded first prize in the Georgia Cello Society Competition and was a finalist in the National Music Teachers Association (NMTA) and American String Teachers Association (ASTA) competitions.
A total of 85 cellists took part in the competition along with 110 violinists,150 pianists and a similar number of vocalists, all adjudicated by 15 judges in each of three rounds. Uzur was one of 24 cellists who made it to the semifinal round, where he also received an award of merit.
Two UGA School of Music faculty also have competed in the Tchaikovsky Competition. Evgeny Rivkin was a prize winner of the piano competition in 1978 and Starkweather was a semi-finalist in the 1986 cello competition.
