L. Harlan Davis, director of the Office of International Development, was presented the Distinguished Service Award March 18 from the Central American Tropical Research Center in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Davis was cited for his service as past vice chairman of the center’s board and “unlimited professional and personal support” to the organization.


Charles Hudson, Franklin Professor of Anthropology, received the 1999 James Mooney Award for his book Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun: Hernando de Soto and the South’s Ancient Chiefdoms.
Given by the Southern Anthropological Society, the James Mooney Award honors notable works on the anthropology of the American South.



Barbara McCaskill, an associate professor of English, has been named one of 27 scholars nationally to receive a Fellowship in American Civilization from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
McCaskill’s research will focus on African-American women prominent in the abolition movement who moved between America and England.

Eugene Odum, Callaway Professor Emeritus of Ecology, was one of four people to receive honorary doctorates at Ohio State University’s winter quarter commencement March 19. Also honored were Richard Klausner, former director of the National Cancer Institute; former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea Lee Yung Dug; and retired Chinese ecologist Chung-Hsin Chung, credited as the father of coastal restoration in China.


Branson W. Ritchie,
associate professor of small animal medicine and medical microbiology, and Cheryl B. Greenacre, assistant professor of small animal medicine, have been certified as Diplomates specializing in avian practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.

Bill Swan
, professor of educational leadership, received the 1999 Harrie M. Selznick Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE), in recognition of his career-long leadership in the field. Swan is the first Georgian to win the award in CASE’s 14-year history.
