Ted Baumgartner, a professor of exercise science, received an Honor Award from the American Association of Active Lifestyles and Fitness at its national convention on April 23 in Boston.
The Honor Award is the most prestigious award presented by the association.
Baumgartner is being recognized for his continuing service and dedication to the Measurement and Evaluation Council, and particularly for pioneering and serving as founding editor of the journal Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science.
Baumgartner, who will step down as editor in August, was cited for envisioning the measurement journal several years ago.

Judith Ortiz Cofer, a professor of English, has been awarded a residency at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Villa Serbelloni, the Bellagio Study and Conference Center in Italy, an honor that goes to about 150 scholars and artists worldwide each year through an international competition and nomination process.

Whit Gibbons, a research scientist with the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, has been accepted as a member of the prestigious Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), an international association of outdoor communicators including writers, editors, photographers, artists, broadcasters, video producers and lecturers.
Gibbons has also been selected by the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum as this year’s recipient of the John Tanner Lectureship Award. The award was presented at a reception honoring Gibbons at Brigham Young University.

Jerry L. Hargis, director of education programs at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, received the 1999 Leadership Award in Distance Education and Educational Telecommunications from the University Education Association at the organization’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
Hargis, who joined the Georgia Center in 1991, was the first elected chair of the UCEA Division of Telecommunications in 1975 and was the recipient of the National University Telecommunications Networks leadership award in 1995, becoming only one of three individuals to be recognized with the awards by both UCEA and NUTN.
The Georgia Center marketing staff, including Don Reagin, Mindy Hill and Nancy Bennett-Evelyn, also was honored at the UCEA conference. They received the silver award for one- or two-color brochure, the bronze award for three-or-more color booklet and the bronze award for advertising (three-plus color).
