
President Carter honored for
Waging peace
Mrs. Carter, Carter Center also share inaugural Delta Prize
Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn were honored April 27 in Atlanta for their efforts to wage peace, even as the House of Representatives prepared to vote on the U.S. military role in the Balkan conflict.
The two were presented the inaugural Delta Prize for Global Understanding, a new award created by the university with a grant from the Delta Air Lines Foundation. The award recognizes globally significant efforts that provide opportunities for greater understanding among nations and cultures. The Atlanta-based Carter Center was included in the inaugural award presentation.

Strategic planning: Dean asks what if
John Crowley, dean of the School of Environmental Design, posed a number of intriguing what if questions to the institutional Strategic Planning Advisory Group at their weekly briefing April 22.
Crowley asked the group to consider such issues as how people outside campus get to and from the university, broadening the definition of student, the universitys role in the surrounding community, possibilities for partnerships as the physical master plan develops and how people might get around campus without cars.
Tenure and promotions
The board of regents approved promotions for 136 UGA faculty and tenure for 48 UGA faculty.

New officers elected, awards presented at alumni reunion
Hilton Young, an Athens insurance executive and former Bulldog football player, is the new president of the universitys National Alumni Association.
Other officers are vice president, Carlton L. Curtis of Atlanta; treasurer, Eloise Starbuck of Birmingham, Ala.; and immediate past president, Carl E. Swearingen of Atlanta.
Spring Commencement activities planned
University of Georgia graduates will be starting jobs or taking vacations a month earlier than in past years when UGA holds its first spring commencement under the semester system on May 8.
Cable television entrepreneur Ted Turner will speak at the ceremony for undergraduates at 9:30 a.m. in Sanford Stadium. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Stegeman Coliseum and split into two sessions, at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. A decision to move to the coliseum will be made by 7 a.m. and announced on Athens radio stations.
