New education dean named

University of Cincinnati’s education dean
to succeed Russell Yeany at UGA

Louis A. Castenell Jr., whose success as dean of the College of Education at the University of Cincinnati has earned him a reputation as a rising national star in higher education, has been chosen to be new dean of the UGA College of Education.
Castenell was one of four finalists recommended by a search committee to succeed Russell H. Yeany, who will step down as dean of UGA’s education college in August. Castenell’s appointment is subject to approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

National conference celebrates
centennial of service mission at UGA


An invitational conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of outreach at the University of Georgia will be held June 11-13.
“Public Service and Outreach: Transitions into the 21st Century” is being sponsored by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the Commission on Outreach and Technology Transfer and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, in addition to UGA. More than 100 participants are expected to attend, including 20 presidents of higher education institutions in Latin America and Eastern Europe.



Parking deck opens

The university will hold two brief ceremonies May 20 to open the new North Campus parking deck and begin converting the Herty Drive parking lot into green space.
President Michael F. Adams will preside at a ceremony at the entrance of the North Campus deck at 10 a.m. to officially open the $8.5 million structure. Drivers can begin using the deck’s 1,200 spaces at 11 a.m.



Two senior administration finance officials announce retirements

Two senior administrators in the division of finance and administration have announced plans to retire.
Robert E. Bugbee, associate vice president for budgets and fiscal planning, will retire effective Aug. 31. Hubert B. Parker, associate vice president and controller, will retire during the 2000 fiscal year.



Literary Circles


In 1993, a group of literary researchers founded a new organization named the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics. With a goal of returning to the study of literature with a less sociological focus, the group has slowly but steadily added members--and touched off controversy in academic circles.
