Atlanta cable pioneer R.E. (Ted) Turner received an honorary doctor of laws degree--UGA’s 74th--and addressed the graduates at spring semester Commencement ceremonies in Sanford Stadium May 8. Some highlights of his address:
On success: “There is no magical way. Everybody’s looking for simple answers. For example, when I lecture at colleges and universities, very often people ask, ‘What’s the secret of success? How do you make money in business?’ The way I answer that one is that your expenses should be less than your income. Simple question, simple answer.”
On lifelong learning: “Don’t waste time--life is very short. . . . When you have time, read things that are worth reading. Just because you’re getting your degree here today doesn’t mean that you’re stopping your education.
“If you really want to get somewhere in life, you’ve got to keep on learning. . . . You want to learn something every day. Keep yourself informed about the field that you’re interested in, and the world, and the nation and your community.”
On philanthropy and community service: “You’ve got to work hard, work smart, keep thinking, and have a strong social component in your life, be involved in your community, because you want to feel good about yourself. . . . Just holding on to your money doesn’t give you the same kind of joy as spreading it around a little.”
