Rebuilding Jackson Street

Construction of stadium skysuites begins
By Tom Jackson

Construction of a $12 million addition to Sanford Stadium begins soon, pending approval of the Univesity System Board of Regents. The project, which will increase the number of skysuites from 30 to 50, is expected to take 14 months. The project will add 10 skysuites each to the east and west ends of the existing skysuite tower in time for the opening of the 2000 football season.
A construction fence will enclose portions of Field Street, with access for service and emergency vehicles only. Field Street will be two-way from each end to the construction fence, for construction and service vehicles and so that the limited number of remaining parking spaces may be accessed.
People with handicapped parking passes who normally use the parking lot behind the chemistry building will still be able to access those spaces by displaying their pass to the security guard at the construction gate. Some 38 other faculty-staff parking spaces along Field Street and in the adjacent lots will not be available during the construction period.
Faculty and staff who normally use the spaces along Field Street and in adjacent lots will park in the perimeter parking lot across East Campus Road from the poultry science building. The lot is connected to Field Street by a pedestrian bridge.
Laboratory and classroom activities may experience some disruption from noise and vibration during the construction period. The work may occasionally involve drilling, blasting, pile driving and compaction processes for limited periods of time.
Football season ticket holders will receive notice of the work in their ticket packet. Construction work will cease for each of the six home football Saturdays. The security gates will be opened and walkways put in place so that spectators may access the stadium from the south side.
