Rebuilding Jackson Street

Construction continues through the summer on two related projects, totaling some $1.86 million, which will virtually reconstruct Jackson Street through the UGA campus. The first phase, which is to conclude during June, includes sidewalk and drainage improvements, a left-turn lane for the new North Campus parking deck, and underground utilities and handicapped access for the newly renovated administration building.
The second phase of the project, which began June 1, will consolidate four former bus stops into a single six-bay facility in which buses can queue without stopping in traffic lanes. A 12-foot-wide sidewalk will be added to the west side of the street (except on the north end, where the historic stone wall limits the sidewalk to the existing six-foot width). The project required removal of a number of trees, but they will be replaced with 25 large trees, 11 medium trees, 10 small trees and 392 shrubs. The completed project will feature a detailed hardscape, street furniture and lighting treatments. Completion is expected late in fall semester.
