Three university student affairs executives and UGAs top attorney have been recommended by a search committee as finalists to become vice president for student affairs at the university.
One of the finalists will succeed Dwight Douglas, who retires this month.
The finalists are Helen L. Mamarchev, associate vice president for student affairs at the University of Florida; Jere W. Morehead, professor and acting executive director for legal affairs at UGA; Richard H. Mullendore, professor and vice chancellor for student life at the University of Mississippi; and Charles C. Schroeder, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The finalists, chosen by a search committee of faculty, staff and students, visited UGA earlier this month to meet with students, faculty, administrators and alumni. Each candidate participated in an open forum at the Tate Student Center. John Crowley, dean of the School of Environmental Design and chair of the search committee, says all four candidates possess the qualities to work with todays college youth.
We are fortunate to get to choose among these four qualified candidates, Crowley says. Each has outstanding experience and ability. The search committee is confident each candidate could provide strong leadership and initiate many positive advances.
Mamarchev, a member of the graduate faculty in the University of Floridas College of Education, became associate vice president for student affairs in 1985.
She was assistant director and senior information specialist at the University of Michigan from 1976 to 1983 and assistant dean of women and academic advising at the University of Kansas prior to moving to Ann Arbor.
She received a bachelors degree in sociology and social science from Southern Methodist University in 1971, a masters from Indiana University in 1973, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1981 with concentrations in counseling, organizational behavior and industrial relations.
Morehead, professor and acting executive director for legal affairs at UGA, currently chairs the University Council Committee on Student Affairs and in 1997 chaired the Presidents Task Force on the Quality of the Undergraduate Experience.
He earned a J.D. from UGA in 1980 and joined the faculty in 1986 after a six-year stint as assistant U.S. attorney in the Justice Department. He was appointed to his current administrative position in March 1998.
Mullendore is professor and vice chancellor for student life at the University of Mississippi. At the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, he was associate vice chancellor for student affairs (1987-96) and dean of students (1984-87).
He has served in similar capacities at the University of Charleston in West Virginia and Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn.
He earned his bachelors in speech and hearing from Bradley University and a masters in higher education with a concentration in college student personnel from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
He was awarded a Ph.D. in higher education from Michigan State University in 1980.
Schroeder has served as vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia since 1993. He was vice president for student services at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992-93 and served as vice president for student development at Saint Louis University from 1981 to 1992.
He has also been dean of students and psychology professor at Mercer University in Macon (1978-81) and assistant to the dean of student life, director of mens housing and an adjunct professor at Auburn University (1973-78).
He received his bachelors in psychology and history and a masters in psychology from Austin College. He earned a doctorate in education from Oregon State University in 1972.
