Columns has moved
UGAs News Service (including Columns) and University Publications (two of the five units of University Communications) begin the year in new offices in the northeast corner of Stegeman Coliseum.

Position announcement
The Graduate School invites applications for the position of director of the Office of Graduate Admissions, which handles all phases of application and admission of students to all graduate programs at UGA.
Responsibilities include establishing procedures to accommodate policies mandated by the Graduate Council, the university and the board of regents; developing technological resources to provide and support an efficient admissions process; providing workshops and training to departments and the Admissions Office staff; reviewing and approving departmental recommendations of admission to graduate programs; managing a staff of eight; advising and counseling departments and prospective applicants on admissions policies and procedures; providing assistance and support to the Graduate Schools recruiting efforts; and maintaining statistical data.
Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to deal with people, and excellent computer skills, including knowledge of databases.
Prior employment in higher education, preferably with experience with graduate education, is desired. Candidates must hold a masters degree; additional graduate work is preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The incumbent will be director-in-training beginning Oct. 1 and official duties will start Dec. 1. Review of applications began Aug. 15.

Extended Bookstore hours
The University Bookstore will open as usual at 8 a.m. during the first week of classes but will stay open later to accommodate book buyers. First week hours are: Aug. 23 and Aug. 26 from 8 a.m.-7 p.m.; Aug. 24-25 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Aug. 27 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
In addition, although the bookstore is not normally open on Saturdays, it will open on home football game days and for Commencement in December.
Savannah Room hours
The Savannah Room restaurant in the Georgia Center will now be open Saturday evenings.
The new hours are 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday. The Tybee Lounge, located within the Savannah Room, is open 5-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Savannah Room also offers a pre-game buffet on home-game Saturdays and the Tybee Lounge will be open before and after each home game. The Savannah Room menu is available on the Web (www.gactr.uga.edu/restaurants/savannah.html).
Pre-teen bone study
Girls between four and eight years of age who have never participated in organized sports are invited to enroll in a study on bone, growth, diet and exercise conducted by the department of foods and nutrition.
Benefits include free bone and body composition tests, dietary analysis, growth evaluation and payment up to $87 per semester for the duration of the study. For more information and eligibility guidelines, call 542-4918.
Blood donors still needed
During the July 20 blood drive, UGA donors gave 99 pints of blood, beyond the goal of 85 pints.
The Red Cross thanks all who participated. Blood supplies are still low, however, and donors can give at the Red Cross donor center, 2440 W. Broad St., on Mondays and Tuesdays, noon-7 p.m., Thursdays 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and every third Saturday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (or call 800/GIVELIFE for other locations).
Russell Library
UGAs Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies is available to researchers by appointment only during August. New shelving, which will double the storage capacity of the library, is being installed.
The staff will continue to be available to researchers by e-mail, telephone or fax and will make every effort to assist those that need to visit on-site during August.
In addition, the exterior wall of the main library, near the Russell entrance, is undergoing repair work and visitors must enter the Russell Library through the main library. That project is scheduled for completion in November.
UGACard office hours
University IDs are made at the UGACard office in the Tate Student Center. Cost is $7; photo identification must be provided.
Employees and dependents must be included in the appropriate database before the card can be made. Cards for dependents require submission of a request form at least five working days in advance.
The office is regularly open weekdays, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. In addition, it will be open until 6 p.m. on Aug. 23, and from noon to 3 p.m. on Aug. 21 and Sept. 4. It will be closed for Labor Day on Sept. 6 and for Thanksgiving Nov. 24-26. For additional information, or to report lost or stolen cards, call 542-8549 or 542-8074.
Learning grants
Grants of up to $75,000 are available through the Learning Technologies Grants program to enhance teaching and learning through the effective use of media and information technology.
Grants are administered by the Instructional Technology Advisory Committee, and can be used to support both innovative explorations and implementation of proven applications.
Guidelines are available from the Office of Instructional Support and Development and on the ISD Web site (isd.uga.edu). Deadline for submission of proposals in Sept. 15. For more information, call ISD at 542-1355.
