Strategic planning: Unit draft plans under review, heading to January 2000 deadline

The process of formulating strategic plans to guide the university and its various units through the first decade of the 21st century continues this fall, with the goal of having unit plans finalized by January 2000.
The institutional Strategic Planning Advisory Group, chaired by Vice President for Strategic Planning Don Eastman, is in the process of reviewing draft strategic plans prepared by 26 campus units—which include not only all 13 schools and colleges, but also vice presidential areas and such units as the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, the Georgia Museum of Art, the State Botanical Garden and the athletic
association.

Taking Stock

Karen Holbrook has now been UGA’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost for a year. The editors of Georgia Magazine and Columns recently spoke with her about past and future changes at the university.
Vice President Barber to leave post in 2000

Allan W. Barber, after 34 yers of service to the university, has announced that he will leave his post as senior vice president for finance and administration no later than March 1, 2000.
At the request of President Michael F. Adams, Barber will remain at UGA to help with the transition to a new vice president and to complete several projects. He will officially retire June 30, 2000, completing more than three decades of service that began when he joined UGA in 1966 as associate treasurer. He became treasurer in 1967 and was named vice president for business and finance in 1971.


UCSF pharmacy professor named dean at UGA

Svein Oie, a senior professor at the University of California at San Francisco School of Pharmacy who has more than 30 years’ experience in pharmacy research, teaching and administration, has been chosen to be dean of the UGA College of Pharmacy.
Oie (pronounced OY-ah) will succeed Stuart Feldman, who will remain on the faculty of the pharmacy college.



Fish out of water

Freshwater Japanese medaka may soon replace
lab mice in chemical screening, toxicity testing

If the work of UGA researchers pans out, fish may soon supplement mice for screening chemicals in the lab. A team of UGA toxicologists has transferred genes from bacteria into the Japanese medaka, a tiny freshwater fish, to help evaluate the genetic health risks of chemicals in the environment.
