UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine opened its Animal Health Research Center on Aug. 12. Some selections from the speakers who joined in dedicating the new facilities:
Keith Prasse, dean of the college: “We are faced with emerging and re-emerging diseases, and an ever-increasing difficulty with antibiotic resistance, and will be faced with finding alternatives and new drugs for animals and man. . . . As a veterinarian, I recognize that you can’t separate animal health and well-being from environmental health.”
Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost: “The AHRC will allow UGA investigators to collaborate with researchers across campus and with industry. . . . This facility, in partnership with the Georgia Research Alliance, also provides us an opportunity to recruit a new faculty member, an eminent scholar in vaccine research, and space for his or her research crew.”
Bill Todd, Georgia Research Alliance: “Today the state of Georgia is number one--leading the 50 states--in technology-job growth: 165,000 Georgians are working in the technology sector. We are bullish on the future growth of the life sciences, and we are very proud to be an investor in the AHRC. We think collaboration is the way to go, and the AHRC is industry-driven.”
