Having a Field Day
Photography by Peter Frey

The re-greening of Herty Field symbolizes to many the university’s commitment to the principles of the physical master plan adopted last fall.
The plan envisions a green and inviting campus, pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly, with automobiles relegated to the perimeter. Herty Field served the university as an athletic field earlier this century—football and baseball games were played here before the nickname Bulldogs had been adopted.
The photo at top, taken from the center of the field looking east to New College, shows student and 1915.
In the 1940s, the field was paved over for a parking lot.
