Rick Rose succeeds David Fletcher as assistant VP for student affairs
By Ryan Crowe

Richard Rose has been appointed to the position of assistant vice president for student affairs following the retirement of David Fletcher. He will assume responsibility for many of the issues and concerns that Fletcher handled, including student withdrawals, prolonged absences from class and assistance in cases of personal and family emergencies.
“Basically, we help to verify a student’s situation so that people on campus can make an informed decision about that student,” Rose says. “Routine, easily verifiable single-class absences remain the prerogative of the faculty; we deal with longer-term and more complex absences. But any time a faculty member or a student has a concern, we are happy to help.”
Rose earned a bachelor’s degree in English education and a master’s degree in theater, both from Florida State University.
He taught theater and set design for 12 years beginning in 1970 at Broward Community College in Florida, moving on to Gainesville College in 1975 and working with Brenau College from 1978 to 1982.
Later that year he arrived at UGA to undertake a two-year doctoral program in higher education, and on completion of his degree he became director of the undergraduate program for the college of business.
In 1989, he moved into the Office of Student Affairs as assistant to the vice president, working primarily on staff development issues and research projects.
Although he has only been at his new job for a few weeks, Rose already sees the prospects for both personal and interpersonal growth.
“It’s good work to do,” he says. “I know I’ll learn as much about myself as anything else. There is a certain satisfaction, knowing that students and faculty--anybody who doesn’t know what to do or how to get out of a jam or a horrible situation--can come to us, and together we can sort it out and make their lives better. What could be better than that? It’s wonderful.”
