Financial expert named head of internal auditing

Dale A. Wetzelberger, who has more than 20 years of financial-management experience in educational institutions and government agencies, has been chosen to be the new director of internal auditing at the university.
Wetzelberger comes to UGA from Johns Hopkins University, where he has been assistant
director/operational audit manager since 1990. The appointment is effective Oct. 1, pending approval by the University System Board of Regents.
He succeeds Kenneth G. Reece, who retired in August after 26 years as director of
internal auditing at UGA.
The internal auditing office conducts regular audits of UGA organizations and functions and oversees control assessments in academic and support units. The office provides training to promote internal control and compliance with university fiscal policies, and helps coordinate the work of auditors from agencies outside the university.
At Johns Hopkins, Wetzelberger oversaw all aspects of operational, financial and management auditing functions for university administrative activities. His office also evaluated systems for controls and efficiency and coordinated audit work with external auditors.
Prior to working at Johns Hopkins, Wetzelberger was director of internal audits at Bowie State University. He has also been an auditor in the Maryland Department of Fiscal Services and was a staff auditor for the firm of Laventhol and Horwath.
He is a CPA and member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and served as treasurer and newsletter editor of the institute’s Baltimore chapter.
Wetzelberger graduated from Towson University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1972 and a bachelor of science in business administration degree in 1977.
