Administrative Changes
Phillips named director of American Languages Program
Martin K. Phillips has been named director of the American Language Program at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
In his role as director, Phillips will head all aspects of the program, which teaches English as a second language to speakers of other languages seeking to improve their communication skills.
A native of England, Phillips received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oxford, where he studied French and Spanish. He later earned a professional graduate qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at the University of London and a doctoral degree in the field of computer-based text linguistics from the University of Birmingham in England.
After teaching and administrative positions in Saudi Arabia and Iran, Phillips was recruited into the cultural and educational branch of the British Foreign Service, serving 18 years in a variety of capacities in countries including Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Morocco. In his position at the British Foreign Service head office in London, Phillips undertook short-term consultancies in 17 different countries.
The American Language Program was established in 1980 to meet the needs of international students who intend to study at UGA or other universities or colleges throughout the United States.
