University of Maryland makes commitment to improve ranking
Clayton D. Mote Jr., president of the University of Maryland, College Park, has outlined an ambitious five-year plan to increase the number of scholarships, recruit top-notch faculty and elevate the school to recognition as one of the nation’s top 15 research universities. Mote’s plan includes several fund-raising initiatives that would raise more than $100 million by the year 2004. The president said that the university should strive to have eight additional programs ranked in the nation’s top 10 by 2004.

Hispanic college choices studied
A recent study conducted by the Educational Testing Service and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities reveals that Hispanic Americans tend to enroll in less-selective colleges and that this behavior correlates with the group’s tendency to hold low-wage, low-skill jobs. Only 36 percent of Hispanic students in post-secondary institutions were enrolled in selective colleges, compared to more than 50 percent of white and Asian-American students. Two-thirds of Hispanics attend community colleges and non-selective institutions.
