Lynne Billard, head of the statistics department, received the Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Medal from the American Statistical Association, which awards the medal to honor the contributions to the advancement of knowledge, applications of knowledge and fostering cooperative scientific efforts directly involved in matters of public interest of national defense and public interest.

William Flatt, professor and former dean and coordinator in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, received one of the
1999 U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Honor Awards in recognition of his career contributions to the field.

Linda Gilbert, information technology training specialist at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, received the Georgia Adult Education Association 1999 Literary Award for her article, “Intranets for Learning and Performance Support,” published in the book Adult Learning and the Internet.

Associate professor of advertising Karen Whitehill King received the Donald G. Hileman Award presented to the outstanding advertising educator by the seventh district of the American Advertising Federation.

Graham Perdue Professor of Chemistry Henry Schaefer received honorary degrees in Beijing this past month from two separate universities. These degrees are the result of an extensive collaboration between China and UGA’s Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry, of which Schaefer is the director.
On Sept. 21, Schaefer accepted an honorary professorship from Beijing Normal University. Two days later, he received an honorary doctorate from the Beijing Institute of Technology.

Michael Wetzstein, professor of agricultural and applied economics, is serving a four-year term as co-editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.

Roger B. Winston Jr., a professor in counseling and human development services, and Theodore Miller, professor emeritus of counseling and human development services in the College of Education, were named Diamond Honorees by the American College Personnel Association’s Education Leadership Foundation in recognition of the significant impact they have had on higher education and student affairs through their research, practice and service.
Winston has served in numerous capacities with associations in the field and as a consultant on topics including synergistic supervision, developmental academic advising and student development theory.
Miller served as coordinator of the Student Development in Higher Education preparation program prior to his retirement in 1997. He served as department head and as a member of UGA’s graduate faculty for 30 years. In addition, Miller served as a national leader through his presidency of the American College Personnel Association in 1975-76.
