2nd Thursday season opens with Jazzy Georgia Brass
The School of Music will open the 20th season of the 2nd Thursday Concert Series on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. with Fred Mills and the Jazzy Georgia Brass.
The concert will be in Hodgson Hall of the Performing Arts Center and feature music by Duke Ellington, a brass version of George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” and special brass arrangements by former UGA visiting professor of music Sammy Nestico. Music faculty members Steve Dancz and Thomas McCutchen will join the group as guest performers.
The Georgia Brass is a flexible brass ensemble comprised of several quintets, including the Georgia Brass Quintet (a faculty ensemble), the Bulldog Brass Society (a graduate student ensemble), Odyssey Brass, the Athena Brass Quintet and the Classic City Brass (all undergrad-uate student ensembles).
Fred Mills, founder and former member of the Canadian Brass, is the director of the Georgia Brass. He joined the UGA faculty in 1996 as a professor of trumpet and brass ensembles and remains in demand world-wide as both performer and adjudicator. He recently returned from Brazil and is preparing to participate in upcoming brass festivals in Munich, Mexico and France.
The 2nd Thursday Concert Series continues the tradition of Thursday music appreciation programs started in the 1930s by Hugh Hodgson, founder of the music school.
Proceeds from contributions to these concerts are the primary means through which School of Music scholarship funds are raised each year.
Tickets for the performance are $9 ($5 for students), and are available at the Performing Arts Center box office (542-4400), open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.
