KATHY BANGLE
Director of Development
College of Veterinary Medicine

TIME IN CURRENT POSITION: Three months.

OTHER UGA EXPERIENCE: Central Development Office, Gift Planning, 1992-1998. Director of Staff Development, Development Office, 1998-July 1999.

JOB DESCRIPTION: “I’m in charge of securing private gifts to support the College of Veterinary Medicine. I schedule appointments to visit with alumni and friends of the college, and ask them to consider supporting us. My job requires a lot of paperwork, so when I’m not on the phone, I’m preparing to call, doing follow-up work or preparing information for Dean Keith Prasse. I handle gifts ranging from annual fund donations of $35 to those who contribute $1 million. We ask alumni to help us identify their clients who are interested in animal welfare; some of our biggest donors are not graduates. Let me say, though, that we have very loyal graduates, as well.
“I also am chairing the ‘Leave a Legacy Georgia!’ campaign in January 2000. The campaign is made up of non-profit and for-profit partners who encourage the citizens of Georgia to remember their favorite charity or charities in their estate plan. It is an informational campaign that encourages Georgians of all ages and socio-economic classes to make a difference and leave a legacy. My e-mail tag line is ‘Leave a Legacy! Remember the UGA Foundation for the College of Veterinary Medicine in your estate plan! Let me know if you are interested.’ ”

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: “The amount of time it takes to identify a prospect, call the prospect and keep the cycle going. It’s a year-round, never-ending process to keep people in the pipeline; there’s no downtime. You don’t just pick up a check from these people; you get to know them and do your part to keep in touch.”

MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB: “I like what I do. My husband, Jeff, is a veterinarian, so I understand people’s love for animals, and I love getting to know people who love UGA, the College of Veterinary Medicine or animals.”

THE PEOPLE I MOST ADMIRE: “My parents, Paul and Kathleen. They provided me with the best childhood I could possibly imagine and were extremely inspiring and supportive. My parents had a wonderful outlook on life; they were patient and encouraging, and had a balance of discipline and fun. I used to ask my parents, ‘Are we the richest people in Madison [Ga.]?’ And they’d say, ‘Of course, we have each other.’ ”

OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: “I like to exercise at the Ramsey Student Center at about 6 in the morning.
“I enjoy watching sports, whatever’s in season. I like college sports, I love professional baseball and the Braves, and hockey, too. I’m a big UGA basketball fan; in fact, last year at a game, I registered for a free trip on Delta Air Lines. UGA had to score 10 three-pointers to have a name drawn, and that night, D.A. Layne hit eight or nine. They drew my name, and I went down to the scorer’s table and picked up two tickets to Bermuda. So my husband and I went in September, and we sent D.A. a thank-you postcard.”

FAVORITE MUSIC: “I listen to everything. Star 94 gets me going in the morning, and I go to sleep to the sounds of classical music on WUGA. I like country music, as well.”

A BOOK I’D RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: Death in Bloodhound Red by Virginia Lanier. It’s about a woman in southeast Georgia who raises and trains bloodhounds to track criminals and rescue people.”

THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAY’S SOCIETY:
“I feel that people don’t appreciate all of the opportunities we have in life. We take for granted our education, that we can eat.
“I’m not immune to it myself. My dad’s a World War II veteran, and after seeing Saving Private Ryan , I am more and more grateful for what that generation did for us.”
