‘Stop work’ order issued for renovation
The university has issued a “stop work” order to the contractor renovating the administration building and will administer the completion of the contract through a different firm. GBI Construction Company of Atlanta missed the original completion deadline of March 22, 1999, and subsequently missed extended completion deadlines of May 22 and Aug. 1, according to Danny Sniff, director of the Office of University Architects.
The $2.2 million project is renovating and restoring the historic North Campus structure, built in 1907 as the university library, to serve as office space for the president and senior administration. The building most recently served as the Georgia Museum of Art, which moved to a new facility on East Campus in 1995.
The Office of University Architects will administer the completion of the contract, with Vandiver Inc. of Athens serving as construction manager. Vandiver Inc. will see the project to completion utilizing the remaining project budget and employing some of the same sub-contractors already involved in the project.
Sniff says the newly hired construction manager will soon provide a new projected completion date, but early discussions indicate it will be sometime in January.
