A 325-year-old farce
University Theatre continues its successful millennium season with its third offering of the year, a production of Bill Irwin and Mark O’Donnell’s Scapin, to open at the Cellar Theatre on Oct. 27.
University Theatre’s production, directed by doctoral candidate Allison Cameron, puts a savvy 20th-century spin on Molière’s 325-year-old farce. The production adapts the original plot for modern audiences through references to contemporary entertainment and ideas. Scapin is set in ancient Rome, where servants donning togas play idle tricks, make shameless puns, indulge in sexual innuendoes and emphasize physical action while pretending to be loyal to their masters.
Scapin will be presented at the Cellar Theatre in the basement of the Fine Arts Building on Oct. 27-30 at 8 p.m. and on Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for regular admission and $8 for students.
Tickets are available at the University Theatre box office, located in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. Office hours are noon-5 Monday through Friday. During those hours the box office can be reached at 542-2838. Tickets will also be available one hour prior to showtime, in the lobby outside the Cellar Theatre.
