Advisory panel urges meningitis shots
A federal advisory committee recently joined a number of national organizations urging first-year college students to consider getting vaccinated against meningitis. The panel acted after learning of the meningitis-related death of a 20-year-old who contracted the disease at a university in Georgia. Earlier this year the Centers for Disease Control reported that college freshmen living in residence halls were six times more likely than other students to become infected, because they live in close proximity to other people and may be exposed to bacteria they have not previously encountered. Additionally, some engage in behavior--like binge drinking and smoking--that can compromise their immune systems.

Female may sue for right to wrestle
Jennifer Wong, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, recently threatened to sue the school for allegedly trying to keep her off the Badgers’ varsity wrestling squad.
Wong wrestled in high school and placed sixth in the 119-pound weight class at the Junior Women’s World Championships in Romania this summer. Athletic officials at Wisconsin told Wong she would not be on the team after she had already enrolled. Wong says she will sue for redress under Title IX legislation, which bars discrimination against women at institutions that receive federal funds. Title IX does include a clause allowing institutions to prohibit women from participating in contact sports.
