| Science seminars The Biomedical Sciences and Health Initiative can provide matching funds for colleges and departments to bring outstanding scientists and educators in the biomedical and health sciences to campus to present seminars and meet with faculty and students during the remainder of this academic year. The selection and visit must be supported by two or more units and be of interest to other units at UGA and at the Medical College of Georgia. A maximum of $2,000 is available for each approved seminar program. Funds are limited, and proposals will be reviewed as received. Proposals forms are available from Stuart Feldman, acting director of the Biomedical Sciences and Health Initiative, 1 Barrow Hall (542-5250; sfeldman@rx.uga.edu). Conflict mediation Mediation of conflicts is available to the university community through UGAs mediation project. Mediation is a voluntary, informal alternative to adversarial proceedings such as grievances or litigation. The process allows people to resolve disputes for themselves in a mutually acceptable way with the assistance of neutral third-party mediators. The purpose of mediation is not to determine who wins and loses but rather to help parties reach their own practical, workable solutions. Mediators are trained UGA faculty, staff and administrators. Anyone interested in using the services of the Mediation Project should contact one of these project members: Art Leed, legal affairs (542-0006, aleed@arches.uga.edu); Peter Shedd, academic affairs (542-6777, shedd@arches.uga.edu); Lois Morrison, Staff Council (542-5849, morriso@calc.vet.uga.edu); or Sige Burden, Human Resources (542-9756, sburden@arches.uga.edu). TA award nominations Nomination materials for the universitys Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards and the Excellence in Teaching Awards are now available from the Office of Instructional Support and Development. Nominations are due by Jan. 7. The awards program was initiated in 1986 as a way of recognizing outstanding graduate teaching assistants; in 1989, an Excellence in Teaching Award for Teaching Assistants was added and in 1990 award eligibility was expanded to any graduate assistant who demonstrates superior teaching in the classroom or laboratory. Library reserves The deadline to submit materials to be placed on reserve at the main and science libraries for spring semester is Nov. 29.
