Gorbachev to speak at UGA
As Columns was going to press, university officials announced that former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev will speak at UGA Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. More details about Gorbachev’s visit will be published in the Nov. 15 issue of Columns.

Award-winning program
An innovative College of Education student-teaching program that requires its students to spend a full academic year working alongside a mentor teacher in a local school has won one of the top awards given by the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators.
The UGA Network for English Teachers and Students (UGA-NETS), a program developed by Sally Hudson Ross and Peg Graham, associate professors in language education, received the annual “Distinguished Program in Teacher Education Award” at the Oct. 13 meeting of GATE in Savannah.
The teacher/mentor collaboration not only increases student teachers’ classroom experience but also provides mentor teachers with stimulating professional development that challenges them to examine their own methods.
Students receive hands-on experience in every aspect of teaching--from pre-planning to instruction to testing--spending 12 hours in the classroom each week in addition to their course work on campus, says Ross.
By comparison, most traditional teacher preparation programs include only 10 to 12 weeks of classroom experience for teacher candidates.
“The 40 mentor teachers in UGA-NETS earned this award with their tireless dedication, year after year, supporting the often difficult learning that beginning teachers experience,” says Ross. “They share their students and classrooms all year for very little money, without extra time, and with sincere passion for improving the profession. Receiving this recognition is a tremendous compliment to their hard work.”

PAC season ticket sales
The Performing Arts Center has surpassed its previous year’s season ticket sales for the third consecutive year since opening in 1996. To date 2,455 Performing Arts Center subscriptions have been sold, according to director Timothy A. Bartholow, which surpasses last year’s total of 2,344.
“We are indeed pleased by the community’s increasing support of our programming,” Bartholow says. “What is even more encouraging is the growing number of UGA students attending our performances.”
UGA students are buying student passes to the Performing Arts Center in ever-increasing numbers, and students at some concerts account for up to 33 percent of the total audience.
“That is notably above the national average,” says Bartholow, and “gratifying evidence that UGA students appreciate world-class music and dance.”
In addition to increased subscriptions, single ticket sales for individual events also are growing, with three of the first seven concerts of the season selling out.
Subscriptions for the Ramsey Concert Hall Series are available until Nov. 19; subscriptions to the other five series at the Performing Arts Center are no longer on sale but single tickets to individual performances are still available.
