Former Soviet President Gorbachev
to speak at UGA

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who helped dissolve Communism in his own country while leading a crusade for global peace, will speak Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. The speech is free and open to the public.
Regarded as one of the century’s pre-eminent international leaders, Gorbachev helped thaw the Cold War by introducing political and economic reform in the Soviet Union, ending Communist rule in Eastern Europe and forging a new policy of peace and cooperation with the United States.


Committee will hold forums
to consider program ideas


After six months of work, a committee studying how to improve environmental programs at the university has generated a long list of ideas--everything from creating a major new college to raising classroom faculty-student ratios and recruiting more minorities to teach and study environmental issues.
Now the Environmental Programs Enhancement Committee must decide which ideas are most workable, and how they can be melded into a proposal that is academically sound and financially feasible.



When the teacher becomes the student...

The winners of UGA’s Study in a Second Discipline grants for this academic year were Mitchell Rothstein, an associate professor of mathematics, and Steve Oliver, an associate professor of science education. The grant releases the recipients from teaching and committee responsibilities for the year so that they can immerse themselves in another discipline. Rothstein is studying computer science and Oliver is working in genetics. Columns talked to the two of them recently about how their year is going.

Endowed professorship
will honor Dr. Hamilton Holmes



The University of Georgia will create an endowed faculty position in honor of the late Dr. Hamilton E. Holmes, one of the first two African Americans to attend the university.
The new position, which will be in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, was announced Nov. 11 by Holmes’s son, Hamilton E. (Chip) Holmes Jr., at the annual Holmes-Hunter Lecture at UGA. He also announced that the family is contributing $30,000 toward the endowment. Theater of the Tate Student Center.


UGA entomologist, geneticist Lois Miller dies after long illness

Lois K. Miller, one of the world’s leading experts on the use of insect viruses for controlling agricultural pests, died in Athens on Nov. 9 following a long illness.
Miller, 54, was Distinguished Research Professor of Genetics and Entomology at UGA and one of nine active or retired UGA faculty members elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors a scientist can attain.


Urban gypsies meet MTv

University Theatre will present a hip energetic interpretation of Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle at the Fine Arts Theatre beginning Nov. 17.
Director Ray Paolino, head of the acting and production programs in the drama department, has infused Brecht’s play, originally written in 1944, with influences from the MTV generation. Paolino’s physical staging will be complemented by vibrant acoustics and visuals.
