Urban gypsies meet MTV
University Theatre will present a hip energetic interpretation of Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle at the Fine Arts Theatre beginning Nov. 17.
Director Ray Paolino, head of the acting and production programs in the drama department, has infused Brecht’s play, originally written in 1944, with influences from the MTV generation. Paolino’s physical staging will be complemented by vibrant acoustics and visuals.
UGA music student Colin Bragg has composed funky, yet melodic, music. The set design, by drama graduate student Travis Smith, will transform the Fine Arts Theatre and bring the action closer to the audience. The costumes by drama graduate student Carolyn Pallisters will give the cast an eclectic urban look.
Caucasian Chalk Circle is set in the war-torn Caucasus mountains of Russia and follows the trials and tribulations of Grusha, a peasant who reluctantly rescues an infant and eventually must face the judgments of the corrupt court to fight for custody.
Caucasian Chalk Circle will be presented in the newly refurbished Fine Arts Theatre Nov. 17-20 and Dec. 1-4 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $12 ($10 students) and can be purchased in the box office in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building, open noon-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. During those hours, the box office can be reached at 542-2838. Tickets will also be available one hour prior to showtime.
