$1.3 million bequest supports scholarships, Gorbachev visit

The university has received a bequest of about $1.3 million from the estate of the late Reginald and Edna Katherine Kicklighter, a couple whose ties to the university spanned more than half a century. The bequest will support academic scholarships and fellowships for students, and a portion of the gift will help finance the visit of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev on Dec. 3


Kentucky circuit judge appointed executive director of legal affairs

President Michael F. Adams has selected a Kentucky circuit court judge to serve as UGA’s executive director of legal affairs.
Adams has appointed Stephen M. Shewmaker, who has served as circuit judge for the 50th Judicial Circuit since 1983, to the position effective Jan. 1, 2000. Shewmaker succeeds acting executive director Jere Morehead, who was named associate provost and director of the Honors Program at UGA in July. Morehead, previously a faculty member in legal studies, had held the legal affairs post since March 1998. The appointment is subject to approval by the board of regents.


Fatal flaw

Much of the information on world-wide pollution is flawed at best and could be entirely wrong, according to a recent study led by a visiting scientist at the university. The consequences of this oversight are beginning to threaten public health and the environment, according the paper’s senior author, research microbiologist David Lewis of UGA’s department of marine sciences.

Alumnus presents $1 million check to NAA for Georgia Club, golf-resort development


Representatives of the university’s National Alumni Association accepted a ceremonial $1 million check from alumnus Stan Coley to mark the formal announcement of the Georgia Club, a 1,000-acre property that Coley plans to develop into a golf resort for the use of alumni association members.


Top North Korean government advisers visit campus, participate in symposium

The university’s Center for the Study of Global Issues (Globis) will host a delegation of top government advisers from North Korea who will visit here Nov. 29 and 30. As part of that visit, members of the delegation will join U.S. policy advisers for a public symposium. Participants will discuss a new phase in relations between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.


'Damn Good Dog'

Legendary University of Georgia mascot Uga V died at his home in Savannah Nov. 22 around 5 p.m. of congestive heart failure.
Uga V had served as Georgia’s mascot since 1990, during which time he became a national figure both on and off the field.
