Good prognosis: Medical College of Georgia, UGA move ahead with 2010 opening of Athens campus
The Medical College of Georgia and UGA have received confirmation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting body for the country’s medical schools, that their resource development is on track to matriculate 40 medical students at the Athens campus in August 2010.

Scientific discovery may aid progress of biological fuel cells
UGA researchers have developed a successful way to grow molecular wire brushes that conduct electrical charges, a first step in developing biological fuel cells that could power pacemakers, cochlear implants and prosthetic limbs. The journal Chemical Science calls the technique “a significant breakthrough for nanotechnology.”
New animal study may shed light on disease-caused memory loss

Retiring gymnastics coach will speak at summer Commencement
Suzanne Yoculan, retiring head coach who led the women’s gymnastics team to 10 NCAA championships—the most in NCAA history—will be the speaker for the university’s summer Commencement exercises Aug. 1 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum.

Graduate program to train teachers to work with autistic students expands
An innovative graduate program in special education has received a four-year, $793,000 federal grant to train teachers to work with middle and high school age students with autism. The program has prepared scores of Georgia teachers to work with elementary-age students with autism over the past several years.
Summer gives CURO fellows a chance to conduct research under faculty guidance
Twenty-six undergraduates are spending eight summer weeks immersed in research projects through the Honors Program’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities.
